CALL FOR PAPERS
Association of American Geographers 2009 ::: March 22-27, 2009 Las Vegas
"Youth Participation in Neighborhood and Community Settings:
Theoretical Considerations and Practical Implications"
Neighborhood and community settings can provide a context in
which young people can gather, acquire a skill, or participate in
projects. Moreover, these spaces can also offer an opportunity for
youth to learn about themselves, expand their autonomy, and make sense
of the world. This session intends to bring
researchers and practitioners to exchange experience and findings
about the social and physical aspects of these settings and the
relevant theoretical and practical aspects of this theme.
Topics can include but are not limited to these questions:
-What theoretical concepts can be applied or expanded through this
form of research?
-What projects or activities help young people to develop new ways of
understanding and dealing with their neighborhood and the environment?
-How can youth contribute to community change?
-How can bridges be constructed between research and practice?
-What ethical deliberations are critical to conducting research in
youth settings?
-What notions of adolescent well-being are being reproduced in these
settings?
The deadline for abstract submissions is October 16, 2008. If you
have an interest in being a part of this session, please email me at
[log in to unmask] no later than October 12.
