In the three years since the UKDFD recording scheme was introduced, well
over fourteen thousand finds have been recorded. The rate of recording
considerably exceeds the most optimistic expectations we had at the time of
the launch, and one of the consequences of this is that the backlog of
records in the 'Pending validation' areas has grown to a level that is
higher than we would wish.
We need to address this situation, and in order to do so it will be
necessary to put a temporary hold on the uploading of new records. The
database and the forum will continue to operate normally during this period,
in all respects other than the uploading facility will be removed.
The aim during the period will be to review the records in the 'Pending
validation' areas with a view to taking one of the following three actions:
1. Validate the record.
2. Write-up the record as an 'Unidentified / undated' object and transfer it
to that section.
3. Remove the record from the database.
The third action will only be taken where it is deemed that the object or
the images are ineligible, or requests for information have been ignored. In
all cases, the recorders will be notified and the records will be
highlighted for a minimum of three days prior to their removal.
At the end of the process, there will still be a backlog, but hopefully it
will be significantly reduced.
The restriction will come into effect on 1 November 2008 and will be for a
maximum period of one month.
