Part of the problem here is to do with language. 'Menstruous' is a term that would probably have only been used amongst the relatively-well-educated.
There was a most enlightening thread on thi9s subject on the now sadly closed Sealed Knot 'Beer Tent' in which the possibility of serious research was occasionally aired. There is, for example, the term 'flowers' in the mid 17th century to indicate the female monthly cycle, and there were potions and remedies for both stopping and starting 'the flowers'.
It is likely only to be those who study particular periods who can shed light on such terminology, particularly since the whole subject was considerably more discreet until fairly recently.
