Aimed primarily at students of Mathematics and Statistics at GCSE, AS
and A levels (and their teachers), our inspiring and fun Open Day will
also be of value to students of all other subjects in which Statistics
is taught. Students and teachers are, of course encouraged to attend as
a group or, where appropriate, independently. N.B. This event is free
but places must be booked in advance.
The main feature of the a.m. programme (see below) will be a
'masterclass' which will involve some exercises for students.
During the lunch break there will also be an optional hands-on workshop
on an environmental topic 'Population Simulation'. There will be some
videos (relevant, statistical and entertaining - one is a short music
video) to watch, and a research project on the geometry of hands to
participate in, plus a careers stand.
Thereafter, there will be a quiz on 'our understanding of the world
around us'. The main feature of the p.m. programme(see below) will be a
talk - a sideways and 'behind the scene' look at statistics - with some
audience participation.
A.M. PROGRAMME
Let's get left-handedness right' & 'Bottles, babies and charts' (Dr
Susan Starkings, London South Bank University/National Teaching Fellow,
and David Ellerby, Consultant)
This class - inspired by articles in the magazine 'Significance' - will
consider whether left handed people die younger than right handed
people and whether bottle fed babies really grow bigger faster?: what do
baby growth charts actually tell us?
P.M. PROGRAMME
Statistics and Stories: Insight not Numbers (Neil Sheldon, Manchester
Grammar School)
Statistics is about understanding the world around us. This talk will
show how data can be properly understood only if we know the stories
behind the statistics. Who collected the figures and why? What
assumptions were made and are they valid? What do we already know that
can help us to check the data for plausibility? What conclusions can we
draw and how sure can we be?
JOIN US
Our programme will be varied and I am confident that students who attend
will enjoy it. They will learn new things and understand more about the
real world usefulness of the statistics they already know. For teachers
who attend independently, this will be a good way to experience at
first-hand some of the RSS services we have on offer and to consider
different approaches to teaching the subject. We look forward to seeing
you there!
