Bruno was an alchemist who was burned at the stake for heresy (for
among other things writing in support of the Copernicus view of the
universe). He spent a fair bit of time in England - he was a friend of
Philip Sidney, among others, and associated with the circle of
hermetic philosophers around John Dee. When you read them, you realise
that his writings were a huge influence on Rimbaud...Like others whose
thinking stemmed from Pica della Mirandola, he wrote several tracts
about the Art of Memory, which in turn influenced the theatre of the
day. Hence Robert Fludd's Theatre of Memory and his deisgn for the
Globe. The Theatre of Memory was designed to be a model of
consciousness. It's ages since I've read this stuff, but it really is
so interesting...
