in the summer time (2008)
the summer was a good idea that someone had once
but now its like a white Christmas reduced to a song
a familiar tune that you recognise and know the words to
but like some drunken karaoke it is distorted
and just a memory of itself
the trees the plants the animals know the tune has changed
some of those stuck in Britain after a glassier melted know
some welcome the change feel their roots swell
others sniff the wind and begin a long haul
to somewhere else
across the moors on the drive to see Martha and Millie Rose
the colours have changed the greens now brown and grey
the trees twisted memories the lakes and streams
dry beds three months ago
burst as the torrential rain makes new rivers
to pour down into the towns below
once I worried about light pollution
how it was difficult to see anything through a telescope
now at eleven o'clock on a summer evening in Wales
through a break between thick cloud
it reveals a new world as the CD plays
a track by Mungo Jerry
