The following note from the Duke of Bolton's agent in 1761 shows that
pillars were being removed at the Preston Moor Colliery, in Wensleydale, by
the early 1740s:-
“The ground throughout the whole moor has been slit and the coals taken.
And what coals has been raised for twenty years last past, are the pillers
which has been formerly left to support the roof which are taken away and
now supported with wood”.
