medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Marjorie,
I think knowing about the rebuilding puts people off making the effort
to go outside the city. I like going there. It's quiet. The
medallions with picture of early popes along the walls over the nave
appeal to me. Plus I used to get a glance at the Pyramid of Cestius
from the bus that went out there.
The church in Isernia seems to have a long pedigree, but I remember the
church itelf as being (as you said) very Renaissance.

Cosma e Damiano, also recently mentioned on "Saints," has bits and pieces ranging from the archaeological dig visible through a glass wall at the back of the church to very Renaissance (and later) decorations. The website is there for the taking or the leaving. I'm happy to notice that it's getting quite a few "takes."
