medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Friends,
I am forwarding this [edited] query from a non-member (David Wulstan) about
a couple of monks (William of Rievaulx and Guy de Cherlieu) who were
contemporaries / subordinates of St Bernie at Clairvaux and later went on to
be abbots of daughter houses. Any references, esp any contemporary or near
contemporary sources that throw light on this would be very much
appreciated.
Begins:
The problem is that Guentner in his edition of the ms [of the "Tonale S
Bernardi" ] says that William of Rievaulx was Guy [d'Eu aka Guy de
Cherlieu]'s pupil-master at Clairvaux: Hiley says the reverse. [ie that Guy
taught William, not the other way round.] ... If you have access to
anything that tells us about Bernard, Clairvaux, and what function William
and Guy had there before they moved to their abbacies, I would be v.
grateful.
Ends.
Note 1. "Guentner" = F. J. Guentner (SJ) "Epistola S Bernardi ... (Corpus
Scriptorum de Musica 24)" ; "Hiley" = David Hiley, "Western plainchant"
Oxford, 1993. Therefore we do NOT need to be referred to these !
Note 2. Some reference works state that Guy d'Eu and Guy de Cherlieu are two
different people although both were Cistercian monks at Clairvaux, and both
were musicians and liturgists. They also do not seem to find it significant
that Guy "d'Eu" seems to have "died" in the same year (1131) as Guy "de
Cherlieu" begins his abbacy there. David Wulstan has looked again at the
early mss of the "Tonale S Bernardi" and concluded that the biographical
note in the final paragraph has been mistranslated and that there is no
doubt that we are dealing with one man not two. I do not have the exact
references for this to hand but it is references to William and Guy (or
William, Guy & Guy) in OTHER sources that we are seeking.
Ever hopeful and grateful,
Brenda.
