Centres and Peripheries: metropolitan and non-metropolitan journalism
Glasgow, Scotland, 7-8 May 2009
Glasgow Caledonian University is launching a series of bi-annual conferences which will
focus on aspects of contemporary journalism practice across the media.
The first conference, will take place on Thursday and Friday 7th and 8th May 2009, and its
organising theme will be, ‘Centres and peripheries: metropolitan and non-metropolitan
journalism’. We would hope that papers would address issues such as –
varying news agendas
news agendas and regional/national identities
news agendas and ownership patterns
the viability of regional/non-metropolitan media hubs
media policy at national and non-national levels
language and non-metropolitan journalism
peripheries within peripheries
The list is not meant to be exhaustive and, although the conference is being held in the
UK, speakers are welcome to address the situations in other European and non-European
countries in the press, broadcasting and new media.
Keynote speakers will be –
Dr. Salvador Cardús of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, a leading authority on all
aspects of the media in Catalonia, and former editor of the daily newspaper Avui.
Professor Chris Dornan of Carleton University in Ottawa, who is a former journalist and a
leading commentator on the media in Canada
Paul Riddell formerly of the Daily Mail and The Scotsman, recently appointed editor of the
Shetland Times.
Tom Thomson, formerly global news manager of Reuters and now the managing editor of
The Herald group.
The event will be held on Glasgow Caledonian University’s campus, which is located in
modern buildings in the heart of the city. The conference fee of £150 will cover
attendance and refreshments, but participants are expected to make their own
accommodation arrangements. A conference dinner at an additional cost of £35 is being
arranged for the Thursday evening. A list of hotels and guesthouses is available on the
university’s website at http://www.gcal.ac.uk/peripheries/index.html,
as is registration documentation.
Proposals for papers, 300 words in length, should be sent by 19th December 2008 to
David Hutchison, Research Fellow in Media Policy, Cultural Business Division, Glasgow
Caledonian University, GLASGOW G4 0BA UK. E-mail [log in to unmask] Authors will be
informed by the end of January 2009 whether their proposed papers will be included in
the conference programme.
