SWORD (in my experience) is agnostic on update v's deposit - SWORD is a
transport system: it encapsulates some "container" and transfers it in a
know packaging, to somewhere else... which then opens the packaging,
pulls out the "container", and looks to see what it contains.
SWORD does not define what that Container should contain; what encodings
it should use; or how it should be processed.
SWORD will transport an MS-Word .doc file just as easily as a
epcdx-styled METS-encoded Latex document.
