Dear All,
We (I, Tajinder Panesor of the Institute of Physics and Robert Massey of
the RAS) have just submitted the final version of the response to
the Parliamentary Committee on Innovation, Universities, Science and
Skills consultation on "Geoengineering". The response is jointly from
the BGA, the Royal Astronomical Society, the Institute of Physics and
the EIGG (group of the Geological Society).
A copy of it is on our front page at http://www.geophysics.org.uk
Thank you to everyone who made contributions.
For those who missed the previous version and email exchanges,
the document contains two parts, an introduction to geophysics
(assuming that the MPs on the committee were not familiar with
the subject) with examples of its application to subjects relevant
to geo-engineering, and two political points, the need for
long uninterrupted data sets on which to base geophysical
predictions, and the need to get people interested in geophysics
at school age to remedy the shortage of trained geophysicists.
The latter point was based on the 2006 report on geophysics education
by Prof. Aftab Khan, a copy of which is also available on the
website.
Robert Massey is acting as principal contact for press/political
enquiries about this document: [log in to unmask] or 0207 734 4582
There is still a little time before the deadline on Friday 19th September 2008
for other (UK) individuals and groups to make their own submissions to this
consultation. Please see the committee's website on
http://www.parliament.uk/ius for instructions.
Regards,
Sheila Peacock
(British Geophysical Association)
