Hello
I wonder if there are questions surrounding the nature and purpose of the communications we have on the list? There appears to be two points of relevance: the desire to take part in critical discusion of community psychology's theories and its practical application; and the desire to unite as a group to effect change. The function of critical debate is distinct, I believe, from the actions or aims we as a group may wish to make. I thought that Alison Smith's comments regarding establishing some common ground for hopes and goals of achievement, despite differing perspectives of theoretical and standpoints was a constructive suggestion. In a nutshell, it may be worth considering separating our intellectual sparring from our practical aims. After all, when a man is drowning there is little to be achieved in describing the water and much to be gained in having an agreed plan of action for such events.
Further, whilst I can appreciate the aims of Paul's theatre, it does make it a little harder for those of us who are still exploring the theories of community and critical psychology to feel confident enough to share our viewpoints, or to concur with other statements within this intellectual framework if we are to risk having egg on our face. It can be a bit daunting at the best of times. That being said, I welcome the discussion that has transpired.
Best wishes,
Elaine
