UNIVERSE VERSUS PLURIVERSE: THINKING SPACE & DEMOCRACY GLOBALLY
Venue
Room: Pavilion, First Floor, New Cavendish Street, University of Westminster, London 10:00am to 7:00pm
In the context of the research network "Spaces of Democracy and Democracy of Space" this workshop will explore the relationship between space and democracy in its global dimensions. In the morning a round table will bring together a variety of theorists, who, from different perspectives, will address the diverse spaces where democracy is inscripted, and also the geopolitical issues that are related to the universalization of liberal democracy. The work of Carl Schmitt is particularly relevant in this last respect with his assertion that "the world is a pluriverse not a universe". Schmitt's claim will be discussed in the afternoon by William Rasch and Andreas Kalyvas, who have both written extensively on that author. Rasch and Kalyvas will discuss aspects of Schmitt's work where we might find valuable insights into issues at the core of this workshop. The presentations will be followed by plenary discussions designed to pull together the different approaches offered over the course of the day. We hope this will bring us closer to a clarification about what is at stake in the important debate between cosmopolitans and the advocates of a multipolar world.
