Sydney Bioinformatics was established as a Centre of the University of
Sydney in 2007. We provide specialist bioinformatics services to a whole
range of researchers from medical and life science fields, both inside and
outside the university. Since its inception the Centre has quickly become
involved in a broad range of medical and biological research projects and is
recognised as a valued bioinformatics service provider.
We are currently seeking a proactive and results-driven Statistical
Bioinformatics Specialist to join our growing team. This position will see
you manage complex bioinformatics projects, in collaboration with life
science researchers, and lead junior bioinformatics project officers.
This role requires exceptional skills in all aspects of microarray
experimental design and statistical data analysis, including normalisation,
differential expression, clustering, classification, and ontology analysis.
It will also require you to have the ability to prepare and deliver
scientific training and education programs in microarray data analysis for
life science researchers. Highly organised and attentive to detail, you will
maintain accurate project management records and contribute to scientific
manuscripts and presentations.
This role is suited to an innovative thinker with a strong customer service
ethos and good coaching skills. Due to the nature of this role, it is
important that you have great written and verbal communication and
presentation skills, and a willingness to learn new skills and embrace novel
ideas.
To succeed, you will need relevant postgraduate qualifications and a solid
background in bioinformatics; as well as familiarity with the application of
bioinformatics to life science research. Strong programming and software
development skills in PERL, Python, C++, R, or Java will be essential, as
will solid general IT skills and experience, and a familiarity with
Linux/Unix environments. Comprehensive experience with common online
bioinformatics software and databases such as UniProt, GenBank, BLAST, or
Bioconductor will also be required.
It is desirable, though not essential, that you possess considerable
post-qualification work experience in the design and statistical analysis of
large, complex microarray data sets. Solid experience in project management,
staff management or supervision, and the design and delivery of education
and training programs will also be highly regarded.

This position is full-time fixed term, subject to the completion of a
satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Membership of a University
