Hi Deb,
No personal experience of such adjustments, but for what it's worth, here's how I would approach it.
If the only way to reduce the teaching load is to reduce the employee's hours, then that's going to lead to reduced pay. BUT teaching duties are (usually) only one part of the duties of an academic member of staff. It can certainly be a reasonable adjustment to reassign some duties, so moving some duties around between staff should definitely be considered, and in that case the member of staff would need to pick up some other non-teaching duties instead.
But I'd also want to think about the kinds of teaching duties involved. We shouldn't assume the only options are teaching and not-teaching. Maybe s/he could do more small master's level classes and fewer large lecture classes - or the other way around, depending on the individual's capabilities. Maybe it would be possible to do some delivery online or to consider team-teaching. And maybe there'd be support available from Access to Work.
Of course those things might not be feasible in practice, but they shouldn't be ruled out without a genuine consideration of the individual circumstances.
Just my thoughts!
Katya

Dear all
I am just wondering whether anyone has experience of their institution
agreeing a slightly reduced (teaching) workload for a member of staff with a
chronic medical condition, as a reasonable adjustment, WITHOUT them losing
pay?
regards, Deb
