I am beginning to think he might have been - the problem is, apart from a
big fight with Archbishop Morton, nobody has noticed him before. I was
asked to do him for ODNB and (apart from Emden's Oxford Biographical
dictionary) had to start from scratch. His parents were buried in
Cricklade, Wilts but we do not know who they were. His first benefices were
in Salisbury/Winchester dioceses. he had a degree from Oxford but has left
no record there beyond the university begging from him after he was a
bishop. He seems to have had Welsh connections, one of whom is called Owen
ap Meredith. The original Owen Tudor was ap Tudor ap Meredith, which
suggests there may be some connection but there is nothing to connect Hill
with Henry Tudor before he made him dean of the chapel royal on his
accession, apart from Richard III depriving him of property after
Buckingham's revolt - which suggests he supported that revolt. the bequests
to the two churches we have not been able to identify also strengthens the
thought that he may have joined Henry in exile.
As no Henry Tudor specialist (and my comfort zone is the minority of Henry
VI) has ever noticed Hill as an intimate of the Tudor/Beaufort family, I am
very hesitant about pressing my reading of 'parrain'. It might equally be
'parram''' - and i was thinking that could be something like
'soul-mate'/'beloved'. All the translations Paul's very helpful search
threw up do have connotations of sponsorship though. so I may have to be
very brave and plump for godfather - unless anyone else has any other
suggestions?
Thank you Paul and John
Rosemary
