mmmm... "polka-dot" or "checkered" ?
>and comes to the grail: I only wanted to say, that there is no negative
connotation with black/niger people
in MA.
that does appear to be the case.
>I do not know, if they had any real knowlegde about real black people, except
of slaves in Venice.
seems that we may have had a bit of a discussion about this on the list a few
years ago.
the earliest definite representation which i know of (1220s) is on the "Kings
Head" portal at Chartres (West portal of the North Transept), one of Solomon's
soldiers is a definite "negro" racial type.
then, hundreds of years later, we have quite a Adoration of the Magi
paintings, with one of those fellows being black.
i always assumed that my "Hugo Niger" and his family in the Chartrain c. 1100
were just unusually dark haired or featured, or both.
but, who knows, perhaps a Negro Palestinian brought back the news of Count
Stephen Henry's death on crusade.
