Thanks to everybody who helped with useful hints.
The crucial point to solve this problem was actually to make sure that exactly the same version of kernel binaries and sources are installed. To make sure that the nvidia installer does not get confused I removed all installed kernel binaries except those of the running kernel. Then the source code of the driver could be compiled without problem.
