I made a double pact in life, Patrick, early on, and, at the time,
unknowingly. One was with the Muse of Tragedy, and as a result I have
a gloomy head, and a disposition to writing dark poems, but the other
was with the Muse of Comedy (who is an outrageous flirt but also your
very best friend when you need her)
The ultimate gift she gives is to not take oneself too seriously. It
helps to laugh, otherwise you end up like Ted Hughes and believing
implicitly in The White Goddess (Robert Graves' pile of gobshite) and
writing spells against Marianne Moore.
Best
