medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hello,
On your first question - the mosaic was executed in 548, so the emperor was
still alive. The nimbus of the emperor is golden and round. If you check you
can read on the symbolism of this nimbus on this mosaic in particular via
Internet. At that time - 6th century the Christian Church is One and
united/inseparable. And if it is so, the question concerning the East is a little
bit incorrect. But! As regards the square nimbus in depicting persons still
living - such an use of the square nimbus is regestred in a Western life - the
one of Pope Gregory the Great by John the Deacon (9th c.). By that time the
square nimbus was used in depicting donators who are still living . The earliest
images, still preserved, as far as I know are on the apse of the catholicon in
St Catherina Monastery, Sinai. The Monastery was built during the reign of
Iustinian by his order.
Best regards,
