Newcastle University/British Sociological Association
Workshop on Social Science Engagement with the Regional Media
Newcastle University, Friday 19 September 2008
Room G21 and G22, Devonshire Building, 9.30 am – 4.00 pm
This workshop is intended to provide social scientists with a practical guide to
engaging with the regional media, which is one important way of getting your
research findings to a non-academic audience. As we have all witnessed, the
regional media can go global in seconds. This event is aimed at academic
colleagues with little or no media experience, that is to say, it is not aimed at
the confident few who can pick up the phone to the Daily Mail or the BBC with
no fear or trepidation!
The workshop will draw upon the expertise of professional journalists currently
working in the North East regional media, together with contributions from the
Media and Cultural Studies and Sociology subject teams at Newcastle
University, and Newcastle University’s Press and Communications Office. The
aim of the workshop is to provide you with guidance on how to initiate and
create good relations with your regional media, and with relevant specialist
websites and magazines – and the benefits to your academic profile, your
School or Department, and your University more widely.
The morning sessions will enable you to hear from practising journalists about
what they look for in a news story, and how a story is developed for TV, radio,
print and the web.
From the Press and Communications Office, there will be practical advice on
proactive (when you have a new piece of research that you wish to publicise)
and
reactive (when your views are sought, or you wish to offer an opinion on a
current issue in the news) engagement with the media.
In the afternoon, there will be an opportunity to take part in a round-table
discussion and practical workshop.
The workshop will build upon similar BSA events held at the Universities of
Warwick and Aberdeen.
