Hello all,
I'll keep the ball rolling. For the last 2 or 3 years I have been researching spoken language through the Worktown papers by combing through the files to find all the fragments of verbatim conversations noted down by the observers. My main interest is in using this evidence to make grammatical and lexical comparisons between conversational language then and now. If, in the course of your research, you come across any files from the early period of M-O which are particularly rich in this kind of conversational data, I would be grateful if you could let me know,
Ivor

Hi Bob,
I agree that this list is underused as a forum for discussion. I am not
sure whether we at the Archive have to take responsibility although we set
it up not so much for ourselves but as a way for people interested in MO to
exchange views with each other.
Jessica conscientiously sends out news items but we rarely get any
response. This is similar to Margaretta's life story research
announcements. You don't get that much discussion there either! maybe
people are too busy?
One potential function is for people to find out about other people's
research using MO material. We sometimes get asked questions which we can't
answer here because we don't spend hours trawling through boxes as many
researchers do. We suggest to researchers that they should put out an
enquiry on the JISCmail list to see if anyone else has the answer.
So maybe I should ask some questions and see if it provokes discussion:
Did any one listen to (or take part in) the BBC one day online diary
project? If so what did they think?
If the BBC and many other institutions are running online life
story/diary/blogging projects, is there a role for MO these days?
Are there any areas or subjects which MO should (a) avoid in its directives
or (b) definitely cover?
What do people think about our current recruitment/selection policy? (see
the website). Should we relent and open up the project to all those who
wish to take part?
How can we attract young people to join the Project? And people from Ethnic
Minorities?
Dorothy
