Subject: RE: Comparison of Custom-Contoured/Moulded Seating Systems
Hi Stephen,
The closest thing that I've come across is this study (actually carried
out here at Strathclyde) which tried to compare the pressure
distribution of various materials used in moulded seating systems-
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6WB6-46FS8J8-K/2/19515dc21

I can send on a full Pdf file if required. It only analysed a small
area of the seat though and did not go into the effectiveness of the
actual manufacturing processes.
This paper-
http://ptjournal.org/cgi/content/abstract/82/11/1064
is also very vaguely related to the advantages of contoured seats
although it is far from comprehensive.
The list covers all of the the custom-contouring and moulding methods
that I have come across. As far as I am aware no comparison studies
looking at the relative effectiveness of the different manufacturing
techniques exist. As you say the number of variables involved in
carrying out such a study would make it very difficult to get useful
results which could be applied across the board as all the methods rely
on the skill of the operater at some point when judging which areas of
the mould need to be altered and by how much in order to relieve
pressure points etc. It would certainly be worth investigating though
as there does seem to be a considerable gap in the literature.
I hope these references are of some use. I was not aware of this
mailing list, would it be possible to added to it?
Kind Regards,
Scott
