Wirral Council’s Archive Service will open the doors to its new premises on 1
September.
The new premises at the Cheshire Lines building on Canning Street,
Birkenhead, feature a spacious search room, with microfilm and microfiche
readers and state of the art computers to support research into local history.
The facility boasts nearly five miles of compelling documents, covering local
government, workhouses, schools, hospitals, law courts and businesses,
including the world-famous Cammell Laird shipbuilders. Photographs, maps,
plans and local newspapers dating back to the nineteenth century are
preserved in a large, purpose-built strong room along with records including
census, electoral and burial registers, which give an interesting insight into
Wirral’s family history.
Wirral Archive Service is running free Saturday morning workshops aimed at
everyone from schoolchildren to family and local history groups. The sessions
will be brought alive with original documents and cover topics including family
history, the history of Wirral, schools and education and Wirral at war.
The archive service is accessed via Shore Road, Birkenhead, and is open from
Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 4.30pm and Saturdays from 10am to 1pm. For
