Medical Statistician
The Institute of Cancer Research
CLINICAL TRIALS AND STATISTICS UNIT (ICR-CTSU)
Section of Clinical Trials
SUTTON, SURREY
The Clinical Trials and Statistics Unit (ICR-CTSU) is based at the
Sutton site of the Institute of Cancer Research which, together with
the
adjacent Royal Marsden NHS Trust, is one of the world's leading
comprehensive cancer research centres.
The ICR-CTSU is one of nine UK National Cancer Research Institute
(NCRI) accredited trials units. Our aim is to initiate, conduct and
analyse national and international randomised clinical trials of
cancer
treatments designed to have a direct influence on routine clinical
practice within the National Health Service. Widespread participation
and national collaboration are essential for such trials to succeed;
therefore close links with other cancer trials offices and clinical
centres throughout the UK are central to the working practices of the
ICR-CTSU. Over 100 UK hospitals participate in trials currently run
by
the ICR-CTSU, many centres entering patients into several trials. Our
main interest and expertise is in early breast cancer where we are
responsible for a major component of the UK's portfolio of
academic-led non-surgical phase III trials of adjuvant systemic and
local therapy. We also have an expanding portfolio of urology trials
and of radiotherapy technology trials.
The ICR-CTSU currently employs more than 50 staff including eight
statisticians, trials managers/co-coordinators and research, IT and
administrative support staff.
The ICR-CTSU works closely with chief investigators at the Royal
Marsden NHS Trust and other leading medical institutions throughout
the
UK as well as with the national expert NCRI Clinical Studies Groups.
Close collaboration also exists with European clinical trials groups.
Whilst Sutton itself contains a large range of shopping and
entertainment facilities, it is situated within an easy commute of
central London and has excellent train and bus links. Gatwick Airport
is
approximately 30 minutes away by car. Sutton is also close to the
North
Downs, an area with pleasant walks and a wide range of outdoor
activities.
The closing date for this position is 12 September 2008. Interview
dates
are to be arranged.
