UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON
Institute of Child Health
And Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust

Cardiac Unit - Vascular Physiology

Statistician/Epidemiologist

Applications are invited for a
statistician/epidemiologist to join a team
investigating the childhood origins of
atherosclerosis, funded by the British Heart
Foundation. The position will be based at the UCL
Institute of Child Health and will include links
with the UCL Division of Epidemiology and Public
Health.
It is now well recognised that arterial wall
changes that eventually lead to stroke and heart
disease begin in childhood. In 2002 we set up a
collaboration with a large prospective study of
parents and children, the Avon Longitudinal Study
of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). We used
non-invasive ultrasound methods to determine
arterial structure and function in 7,507 9 - 11
year old children in whom serial detailed
follow-up was available from birth. This has
included a wealth of prenatal, perinatal and
follow-up measurements including growth,
adiposity, blood pressure, fitness data as well
as blood tests for lipids and other markers
implicated in heart disease.

The post holder will help to unlock the unique
information in this very large dataset. The
analyses will help to define the role of
classical (e.g. cholesterol and blood pressure)
and novel risk factors (e.g. inflammation and
obesity) in early life as well as the influence
of genotype.

The successful applicant will play a central role
in the analysis of these data under the
supervision of the grant holders both at UCL
(Professors John Deanfield and Aroon Hingorani)
and in Bristol (Professor George Davey Smith).
The post holder will help develop and apply the
appropriate statistical models become embedded as
part of the research team and contribute to the
presentation and publication of the findings.

All applicants must have a BSc and an MSc or
equivalent in statistics, epidemiology or
relevant related subject for this post. A PhD is
desirable. The post holder must have previous
experience of research and of handling/analysis
of biomedical data. The post offers an excellent
opportunity to explore and apply statistical
methods to an important area of public health
research. The post-holder will be able to develop
their skills and experience in a range of methods
within a multidisciplinary research group. There
are also opportunities for further training,
possibly as part of a PhD.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor John
Deanfield on 020 7405 9200 x 8018
([log in to unmask]) or Professor Aroon
Hingorani on 020 7679 6612
([log in to unmask]).

Starting salary will be on grade 7 of the UCL
salary scales which ranges from £27,466 - £33,780
per annum depending on skills and experience.
London allowance of £2,649 per annum is payable
in addition. The appointment is funded until 31
May 2010 with the possibility of extension
subject to securing further funding.

A job description (which includes details of how
to apply for the post) can be obtained from
http://www.ich.ucl.ac.uk/ich/html/humanresources/jobs.html
. Alternatively you may email us at
[log in to unmask] for an electronic copy of
the job description. Please quote reference
number: KW/08/44

Closing date for applications: 29th August 2008

Any offer of employment will be subject to a
satisfactory criminal records check.

We particularly welcome applications from black
and minority ethnic candidates as they are under
represented within UCL at this level. This is in
line with section 38 of the Race Relations Act
1976.
