If anyone would like to pass this on to appropriate PhD students, please
feel free to do so!
The ESRC is sponsoring the Battle of Ideas 2008 festival
(www.battleofideas.org.uk). This is a weekend event (Nov 1-2, 2008) at
London’s Royal College of Art, which strives to allow hundreds of people
to get to grips with and discuss the key ideas of our time.
The Battles in Print are essays that accompany each session at the Battle
of Ideas 2008, available online and in print. The Battles in Print serve
as introductions to a debate and for reflection afterwards, and take a
variety of forms, from short provocation essays, to head-to-heads, to
longer think-pieces and interviews with leaders in specific fields.
The ESRC, Times Online, and the Institute of Ideas have set up a
competition for social science PhD students to enter an essay for
publication in the Battles in Print series. The topics for this year
are "America " and "The Family" with a maximum word length of 1500.
These issues will be debated during the weekend and the winning essays
will be made available on The Times website. More details of these
debates and the Battle for America and the Battle for the Family strands
can be found at:
http://www.battleofideas.org.uk/index.php/2008/news/1297/
The contributor of the winning essay in each topic category will receive 2
VIP weekend tickets to the Battle of Ideas, including access to all
events, speakers’ green room, festival reception and speaker and sponsor
dinner. The winning essays will be published in the Battles in Print
series on line and in print and on the Times Online.
