To put it more clearly: I don't have a narrative, a story, "in me" the way a
novelist or short-story writer does. The setting and incident of "The
Circuit Rider" are a metaphor, an "objective correlative," OF MYSELF, just
as the images in a lyric poem would be. Which does not mean that they do
not have to do, also, with politics, ecology, history.
