medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thanks for that headsup on the "Handbook of British Chronology," Rosemary. That's actually the first place I looked for the date of the Convocation, but missed it tucked away way at the back of the book. I agree: it's an invaluable tool for getting dates right, as is--as long as we're on the subject--Cheney's venerable "Handbook of Dates for Students of English History" (RHS, 1945 with reprints and corrections following).
Best,
John

Dear Andrew
Although John is right and the latest on Convocation is Gerald Bray's work,
if you don't have that to hand, the dates of convocation (and Parliament)
are listed in the Royal Historical Society's Handbook of British Chronology.
The latest edition is, I think, 1996. It is invaluable for lists of office
holders, bishops, etc for the British isles. My, 1986, edition lists the
Canterbury convocation as meeting at St Bride's, London from 26 April
(citing Wilkins as source) and the York convocation meeting from 19 May at
York. According to Bray (vol XIX: Introduction, p 45), who confirms these
dates, the main business of these meetings was to revoke conditions placed
on the collection of the second half of the clerical subsidy granted in
1356, and to make arrangements for collection to go ahead as normal.
There was not another convocation before 1360. What exciting things
happened later in 1357??
best wishes
Rosemary Hayes
