Second Call for Papers - IALIC 2008: Faith, Hospitality and Shopping: Re-imagining Intercultural Dialogue
31 October- 2 November 2008 - University of Glasgow
The 2008 conference of the International Association for Languages and Intercultural Communication is issuing a second call for papers addressing the theme of "Faith, Hospitality and Shopping - Re-imagining intercultural dialogue". The conference theme is designed to be provocative and to stimulate lateral thinking in what the European Commission has designated 'the year of the intercultural dialogue'. However, we invite contributors to consider the following propositions.
Faith, whether secular or religious, is a cornerstone of the construction of personal identity. Faith touches on one of the most sensitive boundaries between self and society, and raises issues of absolutism versus relativism. From what stance can 'people of faith' engage in intercultural dialogue?
It might be argued that hospitality is, or should be, at the root of intercultural engagement. The etiquette of hospitality varies across cultures, and hospitality itself has a variety of commercial and non-commercial manifestations. Can the performance of hospitality act as a template for intercultural encounters?
Shopping is a powerful metonym for the self-oriented consumerism that for many characterises the West. It symbolises the pleasure principle, hedonism, and free market capitalism. Is there a place for shopping in intercultural engagements?
The following are just some of the areas we are keen to explore:
Communication within and across faith boundaries
The discursive construction of faith-based identities
The discursive construction of consumerism
The discursive construction of 'the new secularism'
Teaching language and culture in settings characterised by faith or consumerism
Language, hospitality and tourism
The sojourning experiences of migrants and tourists
The pleasures and perils of intercultural dialogue
The impact of tourism on local languacultures
The intercultural and linguistic competences of hosts and guests
The representation of faith, hospitality and shopping in the media
The rituals of languages and intercultural hospitality
The material cultures of faith, language and intercultural practices

Submitting a proposal
You are welcome to submit either a research abstract and/or a description of pedagogical practice, following the instructions below.
Research Papers/ Description of Pedagogical Practice
These may be research papers on any area in the call for papers, including pedagogical research. The deadline for submission of abstracts to this second call for papers: 17th August 2008.
In order for your proposal to be considered you are asked to submit both a short abstract and an extended abstract. The abstracts must be emailed to the organisers as two Word documents by the deadline. The long abstract will be published on the conference website shortly after the review decision. Each conference delegate will then also receive a book of all the short abstracts at the start of the conference. For this reason it is essential that you please pay careful attention to the format and style requirements.

Ours is a multi-disciplinary conference, with an open-minded approach to different styles of writing and presenting papers. Presentations should be timed to 20 minutes. There will then follow time for discussion.
