The Museum of Science and Industry is inviting nominations for the annual
Joshua Phillips (or Josh) Award for Innovation in Science Engagement. The
award is named in memory of Josh Phillips, Science Communication Officer at
the Museum, who died in November 2006. Josh was a much loved, much
respected and highly talented Science Communicator whose outstanding
career will be commemorated with this award.
Background
• The award is open to anyone involved in Science Engagement who is
at an early stage in their career and who is recognised by their peers as
creating innovative work.
• Nominations will be considered by a selection panel whose decision is
final.
• The Josh Award is intended to recognise and nurture the finest
practitioners in Science Engagement who, whilst early in their careers, have
already demonstrated exceptional potential for innovation in the relatively new
field of engaging the public with science.
• The Award will first and foremost support the continued development
of the winners, foster innovative and far-reaching developments in public
engagement in science and showcase best practice to audiences at the
Manchester Science Festival.
The Award
The award will be given annually as part of the Manchester Science Festival.
It will comprise:
• an unique engraved trophy
• a personal prize of £1000
• appointment as “Science Communicator in residence” at the
Manchester Science Festival: the awardee will be given a budget to create
and stage an event, demonstration or other activity as agreed with the
Festival Director during the Festival
• nominees must be available to act as Science Communicators in
Residence at the Manchester Science Festival (late October 2009).
Process
• Nominations must be made using the form below and e-mailed to

• Self nomination is not acceptable.
• Nominations will be considered by a panel of Judges and the 2008
winner will be notified by 13th October 2008.
• Presentation of the Award will be made at the Manchester Science
Festival on 30th October 2008.
