1st July 1837 was when the government started keeping records of births
marriages and deaths. Up to that time this information was only held by
religious organisations ie mainly the C of E parish records which often go
back to the 16th century but also Catholic, Quaker and non-conformist
chapel records. Scottish records are a bit different - I suggest you try
the site "Scotland's People".
You will get lots more information by adding "family history" to the search
terms certificates and 1837.
Interestingly after registration began, people reported deaths much more
often at first than births because you needed a death certificate to get
someone buried.
