I'm going to be a bit fundamentalist here and ask if the hotel has any
right to even ask to see the passport in the first place. If they want
ID (and I've no idea why that might be either) show them a driving
licence, or a printout of the booking confirmation.
My wife is American, and stays in hotels, and in 20 years in UK has
never been asked for her passport, which she wouldn't be carrying
anyway.
As for letting mine out of my sight I'm very particular who has it, not
least because many foreign countries require you to carry ID, and I
often visit places that require ID. The only hotels I recall keeping my
passport, and that was only overnight, was in Rhodes about 8 years ago.
