Software Engineer
Oxford University Library Services
Grade 7: Salary £27,466 - £33,780 p.a.
The Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, is starting a three year
initiative (http://futurearchives.blogspot.com/) to preserve and provide
access to the born-digital archives of politicians, writers and
scientists for future scholarship. This is an opportunity to become part
of the team that will deliver new infrastructure and services to support
this work. This is a three year fixed-term contract.
We seek someone able to develop and maintain complex software solutions.
You will require analytical and communication skills to determine
technical and functional requirements. You will have an aptitude for
developing user interfaces, particularly in a web environment. You will
work well in a team of non-technical and technical colleagues to achieve
common goals. You will be creative and responsive to the needs of the
curators and researchers who will use the systems that you develop.
Understanding of open-source development and emerging library standards
relating to preservation, archiving and digital repositories would be
useful. Knowledge or experience of some of the following technologies is
also desirable: Fedora digital repository and service framework
(http://www.fedora-commons.org/) or similar architectures; data security
(e.g. PKI, SSH, and related technologies); thin client technologies
(e.g. Sun Ray); virtual architectures (e.g. VMware); data forensics
concepts, tools and techniques; web syndication (e.g., Atom, RSS),
metadata harvesting (e.g., OAI), and search engines (e.g., Lucene,
Solr); Unix/Linux including shell scripting; client-server technologies
and web-based applications (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax); server-side
scripting languages, such as PHP and Python; Apache/Tomcat server
technologies; XML and related technologies and standards, including XSDs
and XSLT; object-oriented programming languages, including Java;
practical experience of data modeling, database design, and database
development.
