2.3. Featured Pre Conference Workshop workshop
Two Nations – the Small Business & the Digital Divide
This two hour workshop is jointly hosted by ALT-C and Digital 2010
(http://www.digital2010.org.uk/). The workshop will combine creative
discussion and short interventions in a fast moving programme focused
on the significance of the conference theme for small businesses.
The workshop will be facilitated by Gilly Salmon, Professor of
e-Learning & Learning Technology at the University of Leicester and
one of the Co-chairs for ALT-C 2009.
Topics to be covered and expected outcomes: The workshop programme
will explore realities and responses, leading to ecommendations which
will be presented post-conference to stakeholders in Regional
Development Agencies, Business Links, the Learning & Skills Council
and Sector Skills Councils.
The agenda will cover:
* Scene: What evidence of a digital divide is there in the business world?
* Causes: Can the causes be classified? Are they systemic or localised?
* Significance: Does it really matter to the businesses or in the
wider economy?
* Response: What can be done by those involved in business support,
training or wider education?

2.5. Second Life in real life: education beyond the hype.
Thursday 23 October 2008.
National College for School Leadership (NCSL), Nottingham.

Offered again due to popular demand, the aim of this workshop is to
introduce participants to immersive 3D environments from a practical
perspective and to stimulate critical inquiry into the possibilities
that massive multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) offer learning
and teaching practice.

3.1 The International Journal of Interactive Mobile Technologies has
just published its newest issue: Vol 2, No 3 (2008).

3.2. The European Commission published the EU Green Paper on Copyright
in the Knowledge Economy on 16 July 2008. The paper questions where
the balance lies between access to copyright protected material and
rewarding those who produced it. The consultation closes on 30
November 2008. If you respond to the consultation, it would be

3.3 The European Commission published the Draft Directive on the term
of copyright for sound recordings on 16 July 2008. The Directive
proposes an extension in the term for sound recordings and performers
