JOB PURPOSE :
This post is available immediately for 3 years. To plan and coordinate
activities, analysis and report writing related to the MORGAM study and related
cohort studies of cardiovascular disease.
MAJOR DUTIES :
Plan and coordinate analyses of the MORGAM study data.
Work with staff from the Belfast PRIME study and the MORGAM Data
Management Group in Helsinki to develop and implement procedures ensure the
integrity of the data-sets.
Help develop novel statistical approaches for the analysis of the data.
Liaise with the other research centres involved in the study.
Assist with the submission of grant applications to fund the onward
development of the study.
Assist in the preparation of scientific manuscripts and reports.
Maintain confidentiality of all data received from study participants and
centres.
Planning and Organising:
Plan for specific aspects of research programmes. Timescales range from 1-6
months in advance and contribute to research group planning.
Plan for the use of research resources, laboratories and workshops where
appropriate.
Plan own day-to day activity within framework of the agreed research
programme.
Plan up to a year in advance to meet deadlines for journal publications and to
prepare presentations and papers for conferences.
Coordinate and liaise with other members of the research group over work
progress.
Resource Management Responsibilities:
Ensure research resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.
Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be
assisting with research.
Internal and External Relationships:
Liaise on a regular basis with colleagues and students.
Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of
information and to form relationships for future collaboration.
Join external networks to share information and ideas.
Contribute to the School's outreach programme by establishing links with local
community groups, industries etc.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA :
1. Hold or are about to obtain a Ph.D Statistics, Genetics, Epidemiology or a
related subject.
2. At least three years relevant research experience in public health or a
relevant area.
3. Experience of and expertise in using databases and STATA, SPSS, SAS or R
statistical packages.
4. Ability to contribute to methodological and project improvement.
5. Good organisational skills.
6. Evidence of ability to deal competently with administrative tasks.
7. Evidence of ability to write reports and meet deadlines.
8. Ability to generate new research ideas in the field.
9. Ability to analyse and disseminate complex information effectively.
10. Good communication skills.
11. Good presentation skills.
12. Ability to work independently and on own initiative.
13. Good inter-personal skills.
14. Ability to work as part of a team.
15. Ability to work outside normal hours when necessary.
16. Access to transport to meet the mobility demands of the post.
17. Willingness and ability to travel abroad, in the UK and Ireland in
accordance with the demands of the post.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA :
1. Experience in writing grant/fellowship applications.
2. Good publication record commensurate with experience.
3. Experience of the supervision of research students and/or staff.
4. Strong commitment to a career in research.
