I do think this is a good idea. But it would be reassuring to have a plan B if at all possible... since SoS's are notoriously likely to be called away at the last minute.

many thanks to Maire, Ivor, and Salvo (for very helpful list information). Building on Steve's work with the Lords (news & ownership) would be very useful and might reveal some of the limits of principle on the one hand and of cross-party pragmatism/negotiation on the other.
I'd still be keen to try and get Andy Burnham, Sec of State, DCMS, to do a keynote at the MeCCSA conference - perhaps on PSB and media literacy.
If people think there is some merit in the idea - and it's not incompatible with other working sessions where we seek to draw out areas of policy agreement and disagreement among ourselves - then perhaps the invitation should come from the Chair of MeCCSA since Burnham's involvement would be important in raising the profile of the Association and not just for the Policy Network. I'm sure one of us would be happy to draft a letter of invitation for Christine G if we thought it worth pursuing the idea. Not easy to get a SofS to share a platform, though we could try. Perhaps as much time as possible for questions from the floor might be better?

I am entering this conversation a little belatedly - having been tied up for the past few days.
I think the debate that has been generated by the Ofcom consultation and since, has shown how valuable this network is and how it can play a role in bridging the gap between media scholars and the industry and beyond.
To capitalise on this and maintain momentum and profgile within Meccsa, I think we should aim:
1. To have a plenary session at Meccsa with a big name outsider (Burnham, Hunt, et al) plus one of our own responding/challenging.
2. Our own internal discussion session at Meccsa - perhaps with a few people preparing brief position papers to kick off the discussion (although I do not think that we can, or for that matter should, try and reach 'agreed' policy positions).
3. I also think we should also seek to capitalise on Steve's involvement with the parliamentary process (and Richard Collins before him) in that he/they might present an informal session about :
A. How the academy might intervene in these sort of consultations more effectively
B. What individual academics who become advisors/consultants might make the most effective contribution.

At the moment, I am now about to disappear under a pile of RAE business for the next meeting in the beginning of July, so not much time to think about anything else.
However: re who's on the list - you can click on all the names on the list on the Policy Home Page, according to Salvo. Salvo can you confirm?
Re having a separate event - yes, the Meccsa exec was keen for us to organise an event, as the other NEtworks do, and there is some meccsa funding for this, I believe - so that's something for someone - potential hosts e.g. - to think about. But the exec were also keen to have a policy input to the main Meccsa conference, and I too think this is a good idea. Hopefully the shape of such an input will emerge from our discussions. For keynote - how about Steven himself, since people keep invoking you, Steve. I'd also like to hear Patrick Barwise at one of our events. . . We could have an Ofcom person as well as respondent perhaps, or even Andy Burnham if someone knows him well enough to ask.
I'm happy to do something about children's once free from the clutches of the RAE, and could liaise with Sonia and others - Jeanette, David G, Cindy Carter, etc. Perhaps even a whole panel on the topic? That would be a rarity.
But now back to the paperwork

I agree with Des's idea of drawing on some of the Lords Cttee work on news but what about, also, the Commons (?) Cttee report on content. I think any 'saving of psb' campaign must not forget the importance of drama, childrens, comedy, community radio etc as well as news, docs and current affairs. Also, by january 09 there could be quite a strong spotlight on the nations and regions issue. The problem with radio seems to be partly that Parliament omitted to put this in the brief when it charged ofcom with regular reviews designed to maintain and strengthen public service television. All the more reason to mention all kinds of radio, of course. Regarding possible disagreements over BBC licence fee top-slicing (which I oppose) would it not be possible - Peter - to focus and agree on a 'community and devolution dividend' from spectrum sales?
very good if Steve Barnett could contribute on the Lords findings, as Des suggests (excellent ofcom submission, Steve). Maire or Sonia might like to speak on children's (or invite Anna Hume who heads up one of the main campaigns for kids tv?); Carole Tongue might speak on the European angle and the importance of a bit more non-anglo saxon material on Britsh TV; Philip Schlesinger or Neil Blain might speak about the view from scotland post Blair Jenkins report.
but my main suggestion would be that we ask the conference organisers to invite the current Secretary of State: Andy Burnham, to give the conference keynote on PSB and Media Literacy. He may have gone by then (re-shuffled) but well worth trying.
I attended the VLV Q&A session with him at the Commons on Tuesday night. Arguably the first Secretary of State since Chris Smith to make some strong and controversial public interest proposals, specifically: no to product placement (on grounds of preserving editorial integrity) and yes to maintaining the impartiality regulations for news for all licensed broadcasters and not only for the PSBs. No prizes for guessing who will strongly oppose both these positions. This is probably also a bit unfair to Tessa Jowell who, within the limits of pressure from no. 10, effectively maintained support for the BBC.
Might Maire, as the MeCCSA Exec member be willing to take on the task of co-ordinating proposals for a policy panel plus (possibly) a one-speaker policy key-note? perhaps we could take up Des's idea of 'developing positions of our own' by have a policy session with very short speakers presentations and more time for debate by all present.
