Reaching the Google generation : How do we help them become information literate?

Peter will argue that students often have exaggerated views of their ability to use the web and confuse technical proficiency with knowing how to search. Librarians should not be content with teaching them about their library services and databases. We must seek to change their searching habits, inculcating critical awareness relevant to their subject discipline, which they can re-apply in later life. Web 2.0 tools and active learning techniques give us new ways to accomplish this.

Peter Godwin is an Academic Librarian at the University of Bedfordshire. His main focus is on Information Literacy in academic libraries and the impact of Web 2.0 on Information Literacy. He has recently co-edited a book for Facet on this topic. He draws on many years' experience in academic library management and has presented at Conferences in the UK, the EU and USA. 

 

11.15 Steve Burholt and Jane Knight
The Podcast: a tool for communication with students, or a marketing exercise for the institution?

Staff at Wheatley Library initiated the first Oxford Brookes University podcast, with computer services support.  An initial idea for a Library audio tour in 2006 has developed over time into a series of podcast episodes. Steve and Jane will look at why and how they did it, what technical support was needed and the challenge of working across departments to secure commitment from academics and other university staff.  They will discuss the benefits and unexpected outcomes of getting involved with podcasting.

Steve Burholt is e-learning systems developer, OBU and has worked on many e-learning development projects at Brookes. He instigated the induction video 'Getting Online at Brookes' which is shown to all new students, and which is now embedded in the induction process.

Jane Knight  is a Library Assistant in Oxford Brookes Library where she provides subject support in the Business Library, inluding undertaking the technical side of the podcast. She is a veteran e-learner with the Open University and with Oxford University and is old enough to remember both the first Sinclair computer and the BBC Micro!  Although Jane was determined to have email from the moment she knew it existed she believes that Web 2.0 is only one of the many tools that we have available to get information "out there" and that we need to be capable of using it where appropriate.

Social software - stimulating creative learning

Communities of practice, self reflection and peer critiques have long been an important part of learning and teaching in creative arts subjects. Christian will use examples of actual practice in HE to show how social software applications (chiefly blogs, wikis and social networking sites such as Facebook) can be used to support and enrich these aspects of learning.

Christian Cooper is Senior Lecturer in Multimedia Computing, Thames Valley University. He has taught on subjects from traditional Computer Science through multimedia applications and web development to games design, history and contextual studies. His research interests relate to the field of Technology in Teaching & Learning, and most recently looking into the use of social web 2.0 software to support the learning experience.

Digilab - Mobile Technology for Learning and Teaching

Digilab is a creative space in the Open University Library and is used as a showcase for tools, technologies and resources illustrating how today's technology can nurture tomorrow's learners. User guides explain how engaging interactive materials achieve successful learning outcomes. Exploration of Digilab sparks the creativity of the multi-disciplinary teams who develop the OU's learning materials

Keren Mills is Digital Services Development Officer, Open University Library. She is a librarian with a broad understanding of current trends in educational technology and their possible applications in adult education, particularly m-learning and games for learning. Her work includes supporting and encouraging communities of practice and knowledge sharing across the Open University.
