"Introduction to Bioinformatics",
The main Lecture Theatre of the Royal Statistical Society Headquarters,
Erroll Street, London, on 26 June 2008, starting at 2pm.
Meeting organiser: Carlo Berzuini
Contact details:[log in to unmask]
The meeting is free, and will feature the following three speakers and
talks:
1) Professor Simon Tavaré : "Introduction to Bioinformatics". This talk will
cover basic concepts of biological sequences (DNA, RNA and proteins)
and the technologies (microarrays, arrays, sequencing) to investigate them.
It will also cover novel issues in image analysis in bioinformatics.
2) Professor Chris Holmes: “Regression Analysis: searching for association
in genetic and genomic epidemiology”. This talk will cover testing in
genome-wide association studies and the use of molecular phenotyping
(genomic) platforms; as well as some integrative techniques and the problems
that arise through population sub-structure, LD, reverse causation etc; both
Bayesian and non-Bayesian methods.
3) Professor Wally Gilks: "Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) in Biological
Sequence Analysis."
This talk will cover statistical issues in the analysis of sequence
databases.
In particular, it will discuss HMM algorithms, their use to model a single
sequence or a pairwise sequence alignment, the modelling of sequence
evolution, the analysis of sequence motifs and the study of transcription
factors.
