Dear all
I think any induction at HE should include reference as to whether the individual has any previous experience of CPD in the form of Progress/Personal tutoring as that way you will not be going over areas that the learners have already started and may perceive a repeat of what had been done at school/College. Which could prevent them engaging in what is a very important aspect of the development and will eventually assist them in gaining entry into the career area of their choice.
As someone who has been involved with Post-16 and currently with schools developing learners through the use of progress file to develop their own understanding of their skills/abilities and academic progression. I would like to add to your comments here that there should be a continuation of the work that a lot of learners start either in school or indeed FE and sixth form colleges. There is a need to understand the development at each stage of an individual and how each one should flow into the next stage and not start each one as if the previous had not existed.
A lot of young people are progressing into Higher education today with a much greater understanding of themselves and this previous development should be acknowledge and they should be encouraged to transfer information recorded previously into the starting point at which they begin a new stage.
I have worked on the development of an electronic progress file since 2003 and have always encouraged any learner progressing onto HE to take their records with them and use them to start the next stage of their journey.
It would be even better if the sectors in education can build on the transfer of information electronically further so that even before a learner starts at the new institution they can have their information transferred into the relevant aspects of the Individual HEI's CPD/PDP recording process.
Within Leicester(shire) we are trying to develop these links initially between schools and colleges but hopefully later to build on that and include HEIs.
Hope this gives you another perspective to consider.
Fiona.

Dear Alan and others
Thank you for your contribution. I fully endorse what Alan has said
about PDP at University of Gloucestershire. PDP should run throughout a
student's programme (undergrad. and postgrad). At UoG we introduce PDP
to all Level I undergraduate students. Currently all departments have
their own PDP delivery plans illustrating how PDP is 'provided' and
supported in both taught modules and other activities.
Hope this helps.
Margaret

Hi Rae
We believe that PDP needs to be seen as a thread or spine that continues
throughout the students' HE programme and beyond into Continuing
Professional Development (CPD). Students need to see the purpose of
PDP. The What's In It For Me (WIIFM) factor is essential to get across,
otherwise students will not engage with it and why should they, with all
the other assessment demands being made on them?
On the Social Work programme we stress the importance of PDP and CPD to
students from the outset and back this up by assessing PDP activity
throughout the three year degree programme. In the first year we run a
Learning and Personal Development module for all level one students
where they are expected to think about their learning journeys to date
and identify where they wish to go with their learning. They reflect
upon this and write goals for their first year of study. We have adopted
pebblePAD as our e portfolio system for recording this work. In their
second and third years they undertake assessed practice and again
pebblePAD is used to record their achievements and reflections. One of
their final modules at Level 3 is a Professional Identity module where
students reflect upon their learning journeys and complete CVs to
prepare them for entering the employment market.
Throughout the degree programme students have a personal tutor with whom
they share these reflections and who is involved in assessing their PDP
work.
Best wishes
Alan

Hi Rae
I am running one to one sessions during the induction week as part of
the PDP module for Computing students. This give me the opportunity to
get to know the students and from day one to be able to understand their
needs and guide them and support them throughout the year.
Also, part of the PDP module i run drop in sessions (again one to one)
to monitor the students' professional development.
I hope this helps. let me know if you would like any further info or to
discuss this any further.
Best regards
Ismini

Dear all
Can you give me some ideas on examples of good practice for student PDP
Inductions - I would like to see cases where you have linked in personal
tutoring to PDP i.e. getting students to engage in this process! - It
would be good to get some examples of good practice.
I look forward to your collective wisdom - Thanks in advance
