The Center for Central Asian Earth-Sciences of the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg has an open PhD position in the framework of the DFG Priority Program 1372, Tibetan Plateau: Formation - Climate - Ecosystems (TiP)
Late Cenozoic deformation of the E-Himalayan syntaxis region
(Yunnan, SE-Tibet)
This particular project aims to integrate data from geology/thermochronology and remote sensing/tectonic geomorphology in order to constrain Late Cenozoic material flow in Yunnan/SE-Tibet. The major questions the project will address are (1) what structural geometries describe the flow of crustal material around the E- Himalayan syntaxis today and since the onset of the India-Asia collision; (2) when did the Plateau form along strike from SE-Tibet, to W-Yunnan, to Burma/Thailand; and (3) how did the drainage/river network evolve as a result of deformation in the E-Himalayan syntaxis area? The approach will trace tectonic evolution scenarios across upper and middle crustal levels; it will combine structural geology, remote sensing, tectonic geomorphology, and thermochronology, in particular Ar/Ar, fission-track, and (U-Th)/He dating.
The successful candidates will have a background in Earth surface processes, structural geology and thermochronology. Quantitative and computational skills are an advantage. She/he will join a strong team concerned with the analysis of the Pamirs-Tibet orogenic belt.
