Subject: Re: [COMMUNITYPSYCHUK] New deadline for papers: June 6th

Hi Rebekah,

bit close to the deadline here, but a colleague and I did a piece of
work in 2006 that I thought may be interesting - we examined mental
health service users' views (as well as those of carers and mental
health workers) on what they needed from mental health workers (see
attached abstract). The aim was to develop a list of competencies for
Scotland, as has happened elsewhere (e.g. New Zealand and the US) but
through the process we came to realise how unhelpful a prescriptive list
of competencies would actually be.

let me know if there is space for it at the conference, could you email
me at [log in to unmask] instead of this one?

hope you are well (very long time no see!)

Marguerite

Subject: [COMMUNITYPSYCHUK] New deadline for papers: June 6th

Hi all,

Thank you to all of those who have submitted proposals for the UK
Community
Psychology Conference in Edinburgh this September. We have actually
decided
to extend the deadline for proposals to the Friday 6th of June, as some
people indicated they needed a bit more time.

Just to recap, we have asked for papers around two broad ideas:

1. Community psychology . what is it? How are you doing it? What do
the
values/principles/approach mean in relation to your practice (in
whatever
setting that is, including gardens and university classrooms!). What
are
the limitations and challenges? How to we balance the tension between
the
'great' (being the ideal and aspirational) and the 'good' (the often
compromised ways we move towards our aspirations). If you cant do CP
right
should you not do it at all? What has influenced your understanding of
CP?
All of those tensions that come along with such an eclectic range of
ideas
and practices offer great potential learning about what it means to be
thinking about and trying to do community psychology, warts and all (no
offence intended to wart bearers). We are hoping this day will
encourage
some of the debates we have seen on the list to be able to continue in a
supportive forum.

2. Mental health and the community . do you have practice to share,
research to talk about, debates to start about what it means to address
mental health in the community? This is meant in the broadest sense,
and we
hope it will be inclusive of many different aspects of work people are
involved in, including user involvement, recovery, role of the
pharmaceutical industry, research, teaching, impact of poverty,
inequalities
.the list goes on!

There have been some suggestions about action orientated events we could
focus on at the conference, such as the statement on poverty. So . how
about some proposals for some time to work on this statement,
disseminate
it, or think about the process by which we undertake such actions?

We are open to ideas and look forward to hearing from people about what
you
might like time and space for at the event.

Best wishes,

Rebekah and Grant
