We had a trial with Google Adsense, you can control the look and feel of
the boxes and their prominence. Its a hard call because we felt that
users of our site valued the aesthetic experience, so we went for a
low-level sprinkling of adverts. Consequently we were earning about
enough for a cup of coffee each month, and then started to draw in some
unsuitable adverts which sent the message back to us that it wasn't working.
We considered, briefly, upping the profile of the adverts, but decided
against it. We didnt have pressure to draw an income from the site, it
was just more of an experimental pressure. I guess all we proved is that
if you try to create subtle, low-level, adverts then you will get
matching low levels of income.
