Sewers for Scotland - Implementing SUDS
One day training seminar
11 June 2008 (Glasgow) or 12 June 2008 (Edinburgh)
Supported by SEPA, Scottish Water and Hydro International
INTRODUCTION
Implementation of SUDS in the UK has been a slow process despite the fact
that they are acknowledged as drainage best practice. SEPA and the
Environment Agency both strongly promote their use, but the division of
responsibilities on drainage and current legislative arrangements have
prevented large scale application of these systems. Scotland has been most
proactive in trying to address these difficulties and the Sewerage
(Scotland) Act 1968 amended by the Water Environment and Water Services
(Scotland) Act 2003 has resulted in Scottish Water producing a revised
Sewers for Scotland document (SfS2) in December 2007, which requires the
consideration of the use of SUDS, even though they will only adopt a
subset of SUDS components. To overcome the obstacles of the division of
responsibilities for drainage components (highway drainage, etc), the
concept of (section 7) Agreements has been introduced. This brave new
world means that developers and their consultants, as well as Scottish
Water and local authorities are venturing into new territory.
This training seminar has been devised to provide expert guidance on the
requirements of SfS2 by HR Wallingford who were involved in assisting
Scottish Water with the introduction of SUDS into the document. The
seminar not only provides expert guidance on SUDS, but also includes
presentations by SEPA and Scottish Water on their perspectives on the way
forwards for SUDS in Scotland.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The course is primarily aimed at developers and drainage experts who will
be tasked with devising a practical solution for the drainage of any
development. It will also be of relevance to local authorities and other
organisations with an interest in drainage issues.
