ESRC PhD Studentship - Muslim Women in Scotland: Global Events, National
Issues, Local Lives
School of Geography, Politics and Sociology
Reference Code: GPS01
Closing Date: 13th June 2008
Details:
Supervisor: Dr Peter Hopkins, Dr Anoop Nayak
Sponsor: ESRC
Project start date: 1 October 2008
Duration: This studentship is available as either a three-year PhD
studentship (+3) or as a one-year MA followed by a three-year PhD
studentship (1+3).
Description of the Project
Applications are invited for an ESRC Collaborative Governmental studentship
(Scottish Government). The main aims of this project are to:
identify the main factors that shape the identities and everyday lives of
Muslim women in Scotland (including how Muslim women identify themselves,
how others identify them, and how such identifications are mediated by
space and time);
explore how Muslim women experience, negotiate and perform their
identities, mediated by networks of global, national, local and personal
events; and
investigate how Muslim women are contributing to the way Scotland is
evolving, and what the future might hold for Muslim women in post-
devolution Scotland.
As this project seeks to explore the everyday lived experiences of Muslim
women in Scotland, it will be characterised by a feminist and anti-racist
methodology (Pheonix, 1994) that will be sensitive to power relations,
gender roles and the emotional geographies of research encounters (Hopkins,
in press). Although the successful candidate will have the opportunity to
develop the methods of the project according to their own interests and
expertise, the main methods employed will include a combination of:
ethnography, focus group discussions, diary work and individual interviews.
This will be supplemented by some initial review of policy research and
analysis of census data to identify key trends in the distribution and
characteristics of Scotland’s Muslim population.
Access to research participants will be arranged through organisations and
agencies that work with Muslim women in the three study locations: Glasgow,
Edinburgh and Dundee. The successful candidate will conduct nine focus
groups (three in each location, each with a different generation) and 45
interviews (15 in each location).
This studentship is based in Newcastle but the successful candidate will be
expected to travel to Scotland to conduct the fieldwork. Additional
assistance towards travel expenses will be provided. There is also the
opportunity to undertake placements with the Scottish government.
Value of the Award and Eligibility
Due to ESRC funding criteria, applicants must be either UK residents
(eligible for a full studentship: fees plus an annual stipend of £14,940
per year) or EU nationals (eligible for fees only).
Person Specification
Applicants for a 1+3 should hold, or expect to achieve, an upper-second-
class Honours degree or higher in a relevant social science discipline.
Applicants for a +3 studentship should hold an ESRC-recognised research
training Master’s-level degree in a relevant social science discipline.
(Please consult the ESRC website for a list of Master’s programmes).
Applicants may also be eligible to apply if they hold equivalent experience
and research training; please contact Dr Peter Hopkins for more details.
Applications are encouraged from prospective students with an interest in
social and cultural geographies, race and ethnicity, sociologies and
geographies or religion and/or gender studies. We are looking for a
student with the enthusiasm and motivation to define and conduct original
research about the experiences of Muslim women in Scotland.
Experience of writing up field notes; transcribing field recordings; and
coding and analysing this information using appropriate computer packages
would be advantageous.
