Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Imperial College London
Salary in the range £25,310 to £36,880 per annum
Fixed term appointment for 30 months in the first instance
We are seeking a Research Associate to work on the FREEFLOW project. The aim of this
project is to develop new forms of decision support tools for transport network managers and
individual travellers and to demonstrate the application of these techniques in a number of
case studies in London, York and Kent.
The FREEFLOW project involves collaboration between Imperial College London, the University
of York and Loughborough University, local authorities including Transport for London, the City
of York Council, Kent County Council and the Highways Agency, and a number of industrial
partners including ACIS, Kizoom, Mindsheet, QinetiQ and Trakm8. The project is funded
jointly by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Department for
Transport and the Technology Strategy Board.
A Research Associate is required to coordinate the demonstration activities being undertaken
in London, York and Kent and to contribute to the development of decision support tools. The
work will involve the detailed planning of the deployment of the FREEFLOW technologies in
each area, the design of data collection plans and the supervision of data collection and the
assurance of data quality standards. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to
contribute to the development and implementation of decision support tools for network state
estimation and prediction and for control strategy selection, in collaboration with relevant
other researchers. The work will be undertaken under the supervision of Professor John Polak
and in close liaison with a number of other post doctoral researchers, PhD students and
external collaborators.
Applicants should be qualified to doctoral level (or equivalent) in a relevant aspect of transport
network modelling, have experience of the planning management and execution of transport and
traffic data collection and be familiar with modern statistical computing techniques.
