MLA North West's Programmes Manager, Dr Joanna Oldham, would be
delighted to welcome you to a seminar for museums and archives on the
morning of the 17th June regarding working with Initial Teacher
Education (ITE) trainees. The seminar will explore the capacity of non
hub museums and archives in the North West to offer placements to
students enrolled on ITE courses. MLA North West's work in this area is
supported by receipt of an additional year's Strategic Commissioning
funding (which aims to develop a comprehensive service to school age
children, pre-school children and young people in the region). MLA North
West wants to use part of its funding to broker strategic relationships
between museums and archives in the North West on the one hand and the
education sector via Higher Education Institutions and ITE on the other
for the benefit of school children. 

MLA North West has established relationships with two universities
(Liverpool John Moores University and University of Cumbria) with whom
it is negotiating the use of museums and archives as settings for ITE
placements. Museums and archives in and around Cumbria and Merseyside
are now being invited to attend the seminar to register an expression of
interest in offering a placement to an ITE trainee.

Embedding sector placements into ITE courses provides an opportunity to
forge a sustainable link between Higher Education and schools and
museums and archives. Placements additionally provide teachers and ITE
Course Leaders with an insight into the opportunities provided by
museums and archives for education and engagement with young people.
Sector placements for ITE trainees provided by the museums and archives
are intended to inform teachers about the benefits of collaboration with
our sector. Focussing on trainee teachers also provides an opportunity
for museums and archives to contribute to shaping how our sector is used
by the next generation of teachers. To this end, it is envisaged that
trainees could use the placement to devise teaching and learning
resources under the auspices of a sector specialist which are then
trialled by the trainee on a subsequent visit to the setting with school
children. 

The seminar on the 17th June pertains particularly to work with
Liverpool John Moores University and so museums and archives in and
around Merseyside are particularly welcome though museums and archives
within reasonable reach of the University of Cumbria are also welcome.
