In the Cleveland ironstone mines horses were used for face haulage, hauling
the tubs which when full could weigh up to 2 1/2 tons, using a tail-chain or
a pair of shafts or 'limmers'. Limmers, presumably slang for Limbers, were
usually used where a significant gradient had to be travelled, the wooden
shafts preventing the tubs running forward and hitting the horse when going
downhill.
