Ken,
As far as I'm aware, specular ore, specularite or specular hematite is
crystalline hematite. Micaceous hematite is a variety of specularite with a
particularly platy, even micaceous, texture and appearance. For that reason
it was particularly desirable as a paint additive for rust prevention.
